Planning Board Walking Survey of the Village

If you have thoughts or opinions about whether there is a parking problem or a need for more apartments and homes in Shelburne Falls, the Shelburne Planning Board would like to hear from you. On September 14th between 3 and 5pm, the Board will be conducting a walking survey of Shelburne Falls before its regular meeting that night at 7pm at Town Hall. Please click READ MORE for more information.

Over the next few months, the Board members will be reviewing parking and housing needs within the Village Commercial (VC) and the Village Residential (VR) zoning districts. They will be reviewing those sections of the current zoning bylaw with the goal of tweaking the bylaw where appropriate. They are reviewing the bylaw’s definitions, use table and dimensional regulations – lot size, frontage, side- and back-yard setbacks.

A “walking survey is actually a technical planning term. It is the “systematic observations made on foot…to help you better understand either the community in general or a specific condition or aspect of it. The goal of a zoning bylaw is to provide guidelines for changes that may occur in the future – trying to keep changes consistent with a neighborhood’s character. The Board is reviewing the bylaw to make sure it is serving as positive guidance for the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Building Inspector who enforce the bylaw.

A full copy of the Shelburne Zoning Bylaw is available for review in the Town Clerk’s office or online at the Town of Shelburne MA website. It can be found on either the Planning Board or the Zoning Board of Appeals webpage. The Board is reviewing Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, and 11.

If you are unable to visit with the Planning Board on its walk or to attend the meeting that evening, please submit any comments, suggestions or questions to the Board at Planning@townofshelburne.com.
